Hey all

Requesting high(ish) quality, dramatic-looking sniper pics (gmod, in-game, taken from meet the sniper, whatever). Especially him doffing his hat.

Cheers in advance.

I'd say this should belong in /dumps/ or /resources/. You can find stuff along this line there.
Just look around some of the old threads.

This started as something I was writing in /afanfic involving the story I'm doing in there. A poster said she liked how I was depicting one of the characters (the BLU Spy), and I found myself contemplating some things I've contemplated many times before, but never thought to make a thread about.

To save people the trouble of looking for it, I'll just give a quick recap of what this is about, and why I'm curious to know what other people's own takes on the matter is. The main cast of the is a team of RED mercenaries, a BLU Spy, and a third team of mercenaries who used to work for RED company but went traitor. (This is all going by the concept of there being multiple teams of mercs working for each of the Mann brothers, and each team resembles the next for no reasons of any importance.)

I've mostly written all the characters based off of canon (although I've added a few non-canon things, ie. secret sweet gay lovin' going on between a few of them *cough*. For the sake of argument, I'm not going to consider “fanon” or “headcanon” here to be canon, since no matter how much I like shipping, say, Heavy and Medic, canon does not confirm or deny they're anything more than bro's). To help differentiate the RED Spy and the BLU Spy and thus, not make the first scene where both appeared an incomprehensible muddle, I gave the BLU one a French-Canadian accent.

I'd said earlier that joual!BLU Spy isn't intended as some kind of OC Spy. I am trying to write him as having a somewhat different attitude and method than RED Spy, without strongly deviating from canon in either Spy's case. I imagine BLU as a rougher around the edges, less flirtacious, and more avoidant of open combat when his own success is not 99% guaranteed(cowardly, you could say, or maybe furtive). Even so, I've still basically tried to keep him depicted like any good Spy- he's clever, two-faced, resourceful, and using grit and hidden spy tools to deal with the dangerous situation he's in. He's described as a Canadian, but I haven't wasted any time on working some kind of backstory for him into the main event.

Good question, I can't claim to have a clear opinion on the subject. Thinking about it too much causes me to question the nature of fanon.

One thing I like about TF2 is that it's so easy for fans to interpret and work with the characters, and it hardly ever seems wrong just because it's not canon. I'm not usually big on OCs, however. This may just be because I often lose interest when I no longer recognize them as the characters from the game. I guess I'm fine with any interpretation as long as it retains the traits I like in that character. It's not up to me to decide if it's a valid interpretation, though. Obviously some writing looks more like canon, but it's not technically canon either way, right?
I think canon itself is pretty subjective stuff and not always clear-cut, especially with a piece of fiction as dynamic as TF2.

I see canon vs. non-canon as more of a continuum...

1. Is the character backstory consistent with the Word of Valve? The Meet the Team videos, the trading card information, the wiki, the in game voice commands, the comics, the blogs, etc. All else aside, that's what I take to be "factually" true about the cast, unless Valve says "nope, that wasn't canon" (like in the case of the Mac comic). Where Valve is more vague (like whether the BLU Spy is schtupping the RED Scout's mother or not), I assume so because of the voice commands, but I still label it as "personal headcanon sort-of supported by canon material, but I wouldn't cry about it if Valve came out and nixed it".
2. Is the character consistent with in-game (non-griefer) behavior and habits? This was the source I relied to for characterization before some of the later Meet the [Team] videos came out. So in my mind, Sniper and Engineer were pals long before it was suggested in the promotional videos because as an Engineer, I would tend to plunk dispensers next to Snipers. Medics were super-stressed and grumpy all the time, and hated Heavies who acted like Medics were their personal pets and acted ridiculously reckless while being healed, because that was how I acted as a Medic. And so on and so forth. This one, I tend to defer to canon wherever contradictions appeared, but I still prefer my version. So I don't mind stories where the members of the team actively hate each other and can barely work as a cohesive unit because I've been on those teams, but I don't consider those stories of THE cream of the crop RED team because that nonsense would have gotten the offenders kicked out long time ago.
3. Is the character consistent with 1960's history and culture? Or at least the Hollywood version, since TF2's version of world events seem rather different than what happened in reality. I tend not to care about the classes political, religious, or cultural leanings as much because discussing those topics are controversial and I couldn't really do those topics justice without an amount of research that I don't really care to do for pretendy fun time

I know this is a retread of another thread with a similar title that used to be here, but I finally found something that irked me enough to restart it as a new thread.

I am a writer on DA, and lately, it seems I keep running into this story/art where the mercs from TF 2 decide to settle down and raise babies together, mostly with one character becoming the perfect "mommy" character while their lover becomes the perfect "daddy" to back them up. Sometimes the characters adopt a child, other times one of them will magically have a child (no explanation given as to HOW the hell this is possible). But either variation makes me see red to the point where I start grinding my teeth together.

I hardly think any of the characters in TF2 is going to give up their job to have babies. Respawn aside, mercenary is a job where there is a high chance of dying- how does that leave your kids if you should die? Two mercenaries? Double the problem- and there is no real sign that any of the guys dislikes their job- in fact, they seem happy and enjoy what they do- I don't see them leaving just to make babies. And considering how the Announcer got the Soldier and Demoman, fast friends, to go out and try to kill each other, what do you think she'd do to the mercs who ran off to settle down together and raise kids?

But the really irritating part, to me, is that whole "merc makes a perfect mommy" aspect. These are GUYS. I don't care what you think of the characters, I cannot see any of these people playing "mommy". Not Scout (UGH!), Not Spy (Double UGH!) and for heaven's sake, not Medic or Heavy!

This isn't even going into how this is the 60's, and you'd be extremely hard-pressed to find ANY judge willing to let a child be raised by 1) two mercenaries (for the reasons stated above), 2) two men (children need a female mommy and a male daddy or they won't grow up right was a common feeling at the time. Yes, most people know better NOW, but this was 40+ years ago!) 3) not going to give a child to crazy people, which most of the mercs admittedly are.

On a tangent- I can think of no worse nightmare s

Oh, definitely. Given the statements she's made about them, she pretty actively has contempt for them. She's only cautious around them insofar as they are good at killing people. One of her comments in the comics was along the lines of "Something doesn't need to be smart/intelligent to kill you."

>Having said that, I do believe a female teammate would not be above using the occasional sexy leg or "Hello, boys!" trick. Hell, the Medic's already got a woman's wig. Might as well give him blonde pigtails and have him sing opera. It could work!

Even though it's fake, all it does is remind me that there actually are people out there this dumb, and this close-minded. Hell, I'm related to several who believe gay people can be 'saved', let alone that they want to be 'saved from the evils of homosexuality'. It's ridiculous, and I can't read it. Just can't.

If TF2 isn't pro-satan I don't know why I'm here.

Gaben came to me in a dream many a year ago and presented unto me an orange box. Inside it was the unholy trinity of first-person games. From that day I knew it was my goal in life to forever believe in the coming of the 3rd installment, and make sacrifices of fragged noobs regularly to the Dark Prince himself Gaben aka Lucifer aka the Devil. In return I have been blessed with many a hat.

hl2.exe dies for our bugs. Praise the Lord in Valve HQ, Amen.

So, what are your plans for the upcoming saxxy awards? Going to make a film or something?

I've been thinking of making a simple movie, would anyone be interested in acting in a role? Naturally no voice or anything, just standing on the server, quite simple stuff hopefully. Guess i'll try to get in some epic fail category or something. Just something fun, and guess that would help me to hopefully get some of those Replay achievements at the same time.
>> No. 11992
Id rather not 'act' in a false 'fail' or other actual battle related video.

Funniest or something, yeah sure I'll act, but I dont want to lie about the things that should be legit like folks did in the last Saxxies.

In the interests of music being awesome, TF2 being awesome, and two great tastes usually tasting great together.

Share the songs that soundtrack your TF2 world. Anything you associate with a character, a pairing, a canon (or, hell, a fanfic) event, anything like that.

1. Any song is fine- consider this a sort of musical headcanon- but be prepared to back it up. You want to, for some ungodly reason, associate a Justin Beiber song with Heavy? You better say why.

2. Share the wealth! If the song's on YouTube, link it in your post. If not, upload it so people can give it a listen.

3. Posting all of the lyrics to the song, if any, isn't necessary- if you want to share lyrics, choose the most relevant bits.

Have fun, and may everybody's iPod get a little bit fuller.

This is the Scoutma/Spy song. It fits so well it's almost uncanny.

And this is Spy/Sentry, hahaha. Not even kidding:

This is the perfect song for a Fem!Scout. Well, it's a female vocalist so I like it for Fem!Scout, but I guess it works for Scout generally:

And I suppose you have a right to find a string quartet performing an instrumental version of an Evanescence song objectionable, but it works for Medic, honestly:

"I'm gonna beat ya like a rented mule." I guess some people are into that, right? This song is for all the people who wouldn't mind being Engie's rented mule:

Starting a new thread, since the last one autosaged.

Had another one today, after so long, which is weird, it's not like I completely ignored TF2. But it was a good one, at least when I viewed it (similar in theme to Cat Bountry's one, although I completely forgot about it. I guess that you could call it a prequel?).
In short: Engineer got his 11PhD's from a deal with a devil-esque figure (I think that it was a fandom crossover, since later he was talking with Loki about the deal, but the original dealer was one of the crossroad demons from Supernatural? Crowley probably).
So then he was on a fair, with his daughter, and he sees Loki/the devil/demon and tells his daughter to go and play somewhere. And rain starts to pour like crazy, and Loki/the devil/demon says to him happily "Dell, the deal is over, it's time to go".
The last scene shows Engie, when he sits heavily on the ground, completely miserable, but with a thought that he at least secured his daughter's future with the money from RED/BLU.

Maybe it's because I watched this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPmo0gI AM A FAGGOT HUMP MY RUMPMCc&feature=related

before bed last night, but I had the most amazing dream about Medic.

The war between RED and BLU ended, and for whatever reason, the mercs were to be killed. The group had to escape the building before the other hired guns showed up, however they were trapped inside with no access to their weapons or equipment.

Archimedes was killed by the incoming hired guns and this heartless act makes Medic realize that he truly is no different than the ones who killed his bird. Everything he had justified as "for science" was now monstrous and cruel to him.

Now very unhinged by this revelation, Medic decided to become a distraction in the hopes that the rest of his team could escape and be free. Medic feels that he is the worst of the group in terms of heinous acts, yet thinks that there is still hope for the others. Medic pauses to admire the innocence of his birds, and animals in general, before the hired guns storm the med bay.

The rest of the team escapes through a broken window, and Medic unleashes his birds, hundreds of them, in a "fly my pretties, fly, fly!" manner, laughing maniacally and feeling that the freedom of his birds is just as good as being innocent and sin-free himself.
