Fun fact - shaving one's pubes was, as early as the medieval era and as recently as the early Victorian period, traditionally a way for prostitutes to rid themselves of pubic lice - but, since having a shaven crotch was a clear sign of a prostitute who had recently been afflicted by said lice, and thus bad for business, they would craft "wigs" of wool and fine thread held in place with glue made of specially-treated milk and eggwhite. In dim lighting and the heat of the moment, who'd really stop to closely inpect if a whore's bush was authentic?
Nowadays, genital shaving is done more for aesthetics than hygiene, largely influenced by the porn inductry - which itself did not commonly do so until the "internet boom" of the early 90's led to an upsurge in digital recording with higher-definition, and thus a need to remove "obscuring" hair from the now-popular close-up shots.
