I love designing Fem classes...

Rough sketches of my Fem Sniper for now. I call her Alice. She's not all that different from regular ol' male Sniper... except that she needs a specialized funnel to pee into jars.

Her skin's aged a tad more than her years, from all the sun and desert. Her hair she periodically hacks off-- she does it herself, with her kukri, and then just lets the hair blow off into the wilderness (birds'll use human hair in their nests, so...). She tends to keep it just long enough to tie back-- usually with scrap yarn, or whatever's on hand-- and hacks it off again when it gets long enough to be annoying.

The profile's all wrong and needs heavy fixing, if not just plain scrapping. The face needs some work, too, her chin's not how I want it. But for rough sketches, I was happy enough with them, and any concrit I get will help me when I get to the next one.

Also pretty sketchy right now.

I like for FemSpy to have a balaclava. I've seen really gorgeous designs without, but I guess I always pictured her with. Major difference being the mass of hair she has up under it.

Sometimes I draw her with a long black cigarette holder, sometimes without...

Anyway, on the job I see her wearing the mask, and a three piece suit with more feminine tailoring, a poofy little ascot-like scarf/tie thing going on, sensible ankle boots, gloves... Off the job, I see her dressing just ostentatiously well. Evening gowns and opera gloves, sparkling beading on everything, old fashioned elegance... I see her having this closet full of gorgeous stuff she never really gets the chance to wear-- I tend to 'shop for her' whenever I look through the J Peterman catalog...

Better art later, but I figured I could at least share the early sketches while I'm getting my headcanon off my chest.

And then I went and spent a long time on this one. Long compared to the rough sketches, I mean. Still banged it out relatively quickly, as evidenced by her still-a-touch-too-manly jawline. And the fact that I gave up on hands.

Also, instead of drawing her kitted out for war, I drew her with her weekend eyepatch and a pretty hot little dress. I imagine at this point that she has just blown up a small town bar/restaurant with her best girlfriend John.

(I've designed and redesigned fem!Solly more times than any of the others, I think... I can't strike the right balance.)

Okay, done art-ing for the time being. As per usual, I don't see the fem version as being all that different from her male counterpart, aside from her choices in evening wear when she goes out on the town. Still a brilliant explosives expert and a total lush.

Should I ever settle on a fem!Solly I feel right with, I need to draw them tearing it up together. Then I need to draw them painting each other's nails...

Third attempt at uploading fem Heavy WIP. Tried resizing after I filled in the base colour, maybe that will work.

Plus side, no one has to read my full rant about Russian literature and how most people just name-drop the two Tolstoy books they've heard of.

Later will clean up and add shadows/highlights. My Fem!Heavy design is loosely modeled on me, but... tall and more muscular, I guess.

Girls, girls, girls... you're both pitiful little A-cups whose meager offerings disappear against the vast mammarial tide that is Lady Heavy's huge... tracts of land.

Anyway, another WIP-type thing. They came out looking slightly too manface, which tends to be a problem with my fem Scouts-- either they go too far in that direction, or they start looking too feminine. Need to work on hitting that balance of 'boyish young woman'.
>> No. 896
I think it's less the faces that give off a masculine air with the two and more the bodies; they have very masculine builds, even for scouts. Try slimming them down a bit, particularly narrowing the shoulders. As for the faces, sometimes just empasising lips and understating eyelashes can go a long way in getting the whole "boyish girl" look across. That being said, I like the haircuts they have, and if there's one thing I like in a femclass, it's personality and interaction, which is at work here.

Durr, and of course I didn't slim down their shoulders... Well, they've been blasting their delts, I guess... But I got the shading in so it's not all flat.

Sometimes, though not always, I like the whole lipstick-as-warpaint on fem classes. While I think of fem Scout as being pretty tomboyish, I could also see her maybe swiping some from one of the other gals on her team just to try it out...

Probably from Femgineer, who never really bothers to wear it except to church on Sundays, but takes on a big sister type role and oh crap, now I've got to draw that...

Okay, off to sketch out a more-femininely-bodied Scout hanging out with a Femgie...

Femgineer looking after Scout a bit.

Femgie I imagine is not un-feminine in the same way Scout is-- she's not rebelling against traditional femininity, but she's not terribly cognizant of it. She doesn't wear makeup often because putting on her face is wasted time she could be spending on SCIENCE! She wears practical things, she ties her hair back into messy ponytails to keep them out of her way so she doesn't light the ends on fire but she doesn't put much effort into styling.

Still, she can cook (cooking, after all, is just another kind of science.), and she has a bit of a caring streak. Not motherly exactly, but sisterly. Especially if she gets the chance to talk about one of her fields of interest-- she'll lecture if she gets the chance. Otherwise, she's friendly, but not usually given to chatty moods.

Sundays, she puts on a dress, little lace gloves, and a big hat, and goes to church, with whichever teammates she can drag along (more of them are willing to go if they see she's setting out with a covered dish), but she never gets the makeup right on her first try and has to wind up wiping lipstick once or twice.

Here she's missing a shoelace because it's holding together an only-slightly-dangerous invention.

Scout's slouchy and as long stick limbs, Engie is, of course, a hobbity little gal, with short legs. An hourglass figure with a little thickness to the torso, a combination of having generous-enough curves without much height between them, and building up core muscles by lugging armloads of metal all over the dang place.

My, but I do go on...

Ignore the un-bent Heavy and Medic. The other side is my Fem Heavy heading from the shower and passing my Fem Spy in the locker room. It is currently horrible because I can't use my tablet to edit anything right now.

I don't know if there even is a balcony, and it certainly isn't where the team would be, it's merely the only answer that comes to Fem Spy's mind when faced with the expansive and naked decolletage of Fem Heavy.

Someday I'll be able to fix this in post, as 'twere...

Again, ignore the non-lady parts of this sketchdump. Went through the long painful process of getting things to scan onto my mother's netbook so that I could email them to myself (since my scanner and computer no longer talk to each other) so that I could get my trad. media sketches.

Wanted to draw some femspies (well, wanted to draw, period, as I can't do digital stuff at the mo), including one with mask but otherwise naked and one dressed but with no mask, molesting a Sniper who seems to be scared of boobs...

All my sketches sort of melt away around the edges...

Again, eventually, hope to actually get to edit a few of these into pieces of their own. If anyone sees anything that needs serious redlining, by all means redline-- a few things look wonky to me, possibly because of the angle I had the sketchpad at while I was drawing (never looks right straight if you were drawing at a weird angle...)

More naked Heavy Weapons Gal, this time some full frontal.

Parts I like, parts I can't stand. I'm out of practice when it comes to the ladies, and I had never been able to do a good job with heavy curves, so this is at least a definite improvement over some of my older attempts...

Maybe when I can do digital editing again I'll be able to trace over the lines I really like and I can change the bits that really bug me, fix them all up... I don't know.

All of your women are extremely masculine. They have incredibly broad shoulders and jaws, and the musculature of men. Even Lady Heavy. She would likely be bigger and broader than everyone else, but still female. Not to mention, her fat distribution is extremely masculine. Fat collects differently on male and female bodies. On men it tends to gather almost exclusively on the torso, only spreading to limbs when the person is REALLY fat. On women it distributes much more evenly, but more around the hips, thighs, and breasts.

Also, I've noticed your proportions are off (in your stuff in general, not just these genderbends). You draw arms way too short. Generally a person's fingertips will reach to about their mid-thighs, but in your drawings they go barely past the hips. You also seem to be suffering from what I call "ball-jointed doll syndrome", where someone will draw solid shapes for the limbs/torso without any structure underneath, so the whole thing comes out looking weird. Try drawing/sketching a simple skeleton (just lines, not the entire thing) and adding bulk ON TOP of it.

Pic related, they're various female athletes with varying body types. They're all obviously strong, but still feminine.

do you use references when you draw? Besides the characters, that is. I guarantee, if you look up various body types and poses, it will make your life 100% easier.

Thanks for the refs-- I hadn't pulled any up to work from when I was sketching (it's so easy when I can just have two windows open on my computer... and so awkward to balance laptop and drawing desk both on my lap... I need to not let myself get lazy going back to doing traditional media stuff!)

(Sadly, I am all too familiar with how fat sits on the female body, I just suck at rendering it right now. But, I'll work harder/smarter!)

Again, thanks for clear concrit addressing specific things to work on. I'm sure it'll be very helpful to me. (hee, I've never seen the phrase 'ball jointed doll syndrome', but... not inaccurate. Just been reading about gesture drawing, though, so hopefully I'll get better at simple skeletons.)

So, it's cleaned up, but not as good as things I've done within the past week. I just hadn't gotten it scanned successfully before tonight.

... And here's some more recent work!

Definitely getting better than the older stuff, spent a lot of time this weekend sketching, trying to work on better construction-- varied results, but still feels like a little progress.

Biggest problem I can see is with the Fem Medic-- tried drawing her sans lab coat, and I wanted the blouse to have some slight sleeve puffiness at the shoulders, but her arms wound up attached awkwardly, so instead of puffy sleeves, she just has giant shoulders... Will need to fix.

Should be getting my replacement tablet pen stylii and changing tool in the mail soon, so that I can get to work doing digital editing on stuff.

Redlines always appreciated, there are still a couple awkward spots.

Last sketchdump page for the night, more recent attempts at fem! Sniper/Spy.

I have, like, three more pages of these ladies, plus a couple more Heavy/Medic fems, plus some assorted sketches of the rest of my femclass designs, I just don't want to spam everything up at once.

Again, redlines welcome. I feel a lot better about some of these than I do about stuff from even as long ago as a week, I've been paying a lot more attention to construction and I feel like I'm getting back into the swing of drawing women (after a long time of drawing manry men, all my ladies were seriously looking like bad drag queens...).

Anyway, like the rest, I'll probably be doing digital editing on these when I'm able to.
>> No. 1049
A different anon here this time. I really like your character design, but there's a few things you could change which would probably help your drawings look slightly more... well, for lack of a better word, right... So, concrit incoming.

>>1041
You've got your general pose for this one down pat apart from the leg on the right, which is twisting downwards unnaturally... If her leg was at that angle, her top of her foot would be facing us. As it is, her calf-bones would have to twist 180 degrees to accommodate that position.

Apart from that, some minor things, such as the clavicle (if present at all) should sit higher up where the neck joins the chest.

But you probably know that already considering your more recent work has improved a lot.

>>1042
Your overall construction on the Heavy is really good here! The only thing I'd really suggest (apart from one thing I'll mention later) is to either move her hairline down a bit or give her more at the top. You've got her looking down a bit so you should be able to see more of it, but it's not that big of a deal.

I think your problem with the Medic lies with her shoulders, not the shirt per se. You've given her quite a manly physique in that her shoulders are wide. If you look at her, and imagined her with her arms hanging at her sides, from where they are they'd just dangle there; if you look at yourself, as a girl your arms touch your sides. Girls naturally have thinner shoulders regardless of how built they are, so you might want to smoodge those shoulders in a tad, then the shirt won't make her look overly masculine.

>>1043
Looking good, except from one recurring problem.

BOOBIES.

It seems to me that you're having some difficulty drawing boobies. Might just be that you haven't drawn them in a while and are still getting used to it, but for my sake just let me ramble on here a bit. You know all those things you tutorials you read about "boobs are like water balloons" and whatever? That only applies to porn stars. Real boobs are like... Well, they're like flaps of skin filled with mammary glands and fat. At thirty-something years old, they're not gonna be perfectly perky or round. Quite the opposite. I await the day with dread. They're going to lie flatter than you've made them most of the time, and they're not usually going to be the same shape as you've made them. I think your Spy's are the right shape, but your Heavy's are going to be bigger + flatter, and your Medic's have been outlined funny to make them look bigger than the shape on your sketch. I- ARGH, I NEED MY TABLET TO SHOW YOU THIS PROPERLY. Can't describe what I mean when it comes to boobs. TOMORROW. If you've still got the will to draw after this huge fucking rant tomorrow I will find my tablet pen and redline for you. And it will be awesome.

TL;DR
Read it, I spent ages typing that you lazy bastard.

Thanks! (Yeah, I'm still getting back into the swing of drawing breasts at all, and I think a big part of my problem is that you can't use a ref wearing a bra to draw a nude... does not work, but of course I don't think of that at the time... hurr. I can only blame rustiness for problems with clothed breasts, though.)

Anyway, yay! I look forward to getting some redlines on that.

(It seems like I am mostly reminded of how narrow women's shoulders are when I need to buy shirts... Also I used to have a real problem with-- the best way I can put it is lollipop people? Where I'd start with the head, and then everything would just taper. I'm not as bad as I was back in high school, but it tends to really show in my shoulder-to-hip ratio sometimes. My perspective is wonky. Welp, now that my own tablet is operational again, I can actually work on editing things and getting more practice in)

Anyway, I really appreciate all the concrit. Thanks so much for taking the time!

LUCKILY FOR YOU I have lots of experience drawing naked people of all sizes thanks to life drawing, so drawing boobs is like second nature to me now. Lucky for me? Not so much. I can't draw men any more.

I'm sorry, but these redlines are all terrible. You barely fixed any problems. You made a couple of decent adjustments here and there, but overall the figures are still unbalanced and awkward.

OP, study anatomy, and I mean really study it. Take some time to draw actual body parts. Especially skeletons. You're having a lot of trouble with shoulders and how they connect to the body. Google up some actual skeletons and take the time to draw them. Do the same with muscle groups. Look up nude figures and draw those. When you're drawing something, always use references. You've been a great sport and responding to critique like a champ (and I see some improvement), so I'm sure you can do it.

Thanks, you guys. Been trying to take all I can from the critiques I've been getting. (and thanks for the votes of... good sportsmanship, I guess? I'm used to writing critique groups and taking performance notes, so I guess I just bring the same spirit to getting art critiques. I want to get better, someone else wants to make me get better, it's all good in the hood. But I'm happy to hear my positive attitude is appreciated/aspired towards)

Found some great anat. references that I've been studying, keeping at least one reference open while I work, looking at shoulders/skeletons more carefully and all that good stuff.

Here's a quick sketch of a fem Scout-- not sure if she's waking up or getting ready to turn in... Haven't cleaned it up any yet, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to nail the legs, foreshortening on seated figures often trips me up, but at least now I've got a good reference picture I can pull up when I work more on it.

And the other quick sketch I got done. Found a reference photo of a model-with-handgun that I liked. The reference photo initially made me think of a Spy, but after I looked at her for a while, I thought I might rather try doing a Fem Engie holding that pose. Changed the tilt of the head up, and not sure I'm happy with. I was kind of thinking I wanted to expand on this and put her into a 'swapping weapons' picture, with the fem Engie testing out the handgun and fem Scout swinging a wrench around.

Anyway, again, haven't gone in and refined anything yet, but I had a lot of fun looking for references and sort of 'translating' what I found.

Wow, these are better already!

For the scout: You're doing alright with forshortening so far, but her arms seem very stiff somehow. kind of like she's trying to be an air traffic controller instead of stretching. Part of it is that she's kind of cocking her head a bit instead of leaning it back or something.

For the engineer: Her head is way too small for the rest of her body, and her shoulders are far too broad and masculine. Her face is cute.

You're doing really well so far, keep going!

Thanks!

On Scout, with the neck part of the pose, I think the model I was using was stretching her neck out to the side, which seemed fairly natural to me, since I have to do that a lot... I'll have to work on softening the arms, though, because I can see what you mean there.

Her feet are bugging me, and after working on another layer of 'penciling', I think they might actually be worse... At least with the legs I can hope that the foreshortening continues to work when I get around to the layers of colour and shading, but I don't know what I'm doing with the feet. I don't want to just punk out and crop the whole thing to avoid it, I want to... I want to conquer feet, I guess. (Most of my figures sort of fade out, and even when they don't, I don't do bare feet often)

Changed the BG so that it would feel more light red and less pink. Although when I do start working in colours, at least the area directly around her will be her wall/bed/floor, so I guess it doesn't matter, but it felt way too pink.

Not quite happy with her face, but I'm not used to that much of an angle doing faces, so that's probably just something I need to work on.

Started adding colour.

Feet are still all wonky... And I do need to work on blending, and the shadow on her leg looks kind of strong. I mean, the shadow cast would be deep, but at the moment it looks off.

For a little while the arm was looking more natural, but now it looks wrong again... not sure what I need to change there, and it might just be that I need to blend the tone more evenly.

Anyway, still working on it.

Annnd... liking it less.

That is a tricky pose, Scout... hard to make the head look like it's attached.

I went back to the very first thing I posted in this thread, just for kicks, I guess. Made a little improvement along with some colour.

Not perfect, but what ever is? It was kind of nice to go back to a really old piece with things I've learned since, even if it still needs work.

Thought I'd try my hand at a genderbent comic. Not sure how many pages it will wind up running, but here's the rough 'pencil' stage of the first.

Basically, in which Spy delights in relieving her romantic misery by bothering Engie. I had an idea for a genderbend story wherein everybody bothers Engie with their not-really-practical problems until she bars everyone from her workshop on pain of death, but I have a hard time writing when people are around, so I started sketching out an outline.

'inked'/coloured. Not entirely cleaned up, because I always find I can't stand something once it is...

Don't know why I worked on finishing the second page first.
