volume is the roundness of an object. Think of a volume of a ball. The ball is 3D because of the shading, the core shadow, and the reflected light. Without these elements, the ball would a flat, or in other words, a circle.
I'm also not sure what they mean by texture, but there is a bit of a problem with the shading, which also goes back to the volume of your characters. If you squint your eyes or look at the colored image in black and white, you'll notice that the everythings in this boring mid-tone value. Everythings mid-gray, no dark darks and no light lights. Because of this, the form of Heavy, Spy, and Scout are lost. It's not just that, but the anatomy itself is kind of awkward. Spy's torso confuses the hell out of me. What is that?
You should try doing some anatomical studies so you won't have to make the body up. Go to the library or to the help thread and just copy naked bodies or muscles. Don't just look in there when you need help. Study it and learn it, and your diligence will eventually show through your drawings.
