For Sniper... (7)

1.

We are gathered here today to mourn the loss of our fellow team member, Sniper.

He was a good man.

...And a damn fine shot too. But nothing could protect him from the knife through his midsection whilst looking through his scope. Engineer popped up a second after and blasted the BLU Spy to bits, but the damage was done. Engineer called for a Medic what must've been over 20 times. He was wounded, drowning in his own pool of blood. But something caught his eye still.

A heavy. And he was headed right for Scout. With his last breathe, he held his rifle tight, and aimed. That heavy never knew what happened. Sniper was terribly fatigued. Engineer held him together with his blood-stained hands, and called for the medic.

Oh god, where was the medic? Where could he be?

"Doc!" the Engineer sighed a breath of relief. Sniper was going to be alright. He was going to be alright! At his wounded state, his teammates gathered to help the Medic make his progress faster. Scout quickly stripped him of his bloodied clothes. Demoman poured alcohol over the wound and numbed it. Spy propped the shards of metal out with his butterfly knife. Medic administered care with his Medigun and kept Sniper alive. Heavy kept his body slanted. Pyro superheated the end of Soldier's shovel and cauterized the wound, sealing it. Sniper was relieved. But as his friends gathered around him with their backs to the enemy battlements, they did not see what Sniper saw.

They couldn't.
An enemy Soldier stared Sniper right in the face. They both knew what was going to happen.

A critical rocket was unleashed, and sped towards the entire BLU team huddled together. Sniper couldn't let this happen.

With his last bits of strength, he used his rifle to prod Heavy towards the other teammates. Like dominos, they fell together far away from Sniper. Dazed and confused, the medic looked back. His expression quickly changed from a surprised look to a frown. The Sniper looked back at Medic. He took off his dark glasses.

And he winked.

Sniper would never be one again. The rocket blew Sniper to pieces. There was a great silence. Scout ran towards Sniper's body pieces and hopelessly tried to reassemble them, hoping dearly that it would work. Everyone else looked onward as Scout looked around for Sniper's head. It was never found, or seen again.

It's hard to say who will grief his loss the least. Scout's optimism was truly saddening. Pyro retired, never fighting again after that terrible day. Spy donated his butterfly knife to Sniper's coffin, where it lay next to Sniper's rifle, as per request. Heavy was killed during the later events of the terrible day, and as was Demoman. Two separate pictures of the duo lay at each side of the coffin. Medic never spoke again. Though he was present with Heavy as he spoke his final words, "This for hurting kangaroo man!" Through his heavy English impairment, nobody ever knew whether Heavy believed Sniper was still alive or not. Soldier gave up his weapons and became a member of the Red Cross, hoping to prevent future disasters such as this one.

But I think the one person that will miss Sniper the most is Engineer. Oh, how he and Sniper always worked in synergy. One would cover the other, and vice versa. He'd beat himself up over it. "If I'd been there, If I hadn't left for supplies, Snipe'd still be alive." Later that day, Engineer found Sniper's sunglasses and hat. He gave the glasses to Heavy to keep his spirit up, but kept the hat.

Nobody would ever know again what happened to that hat after Engineer committed suicide the following month. If he were here right now, I'd think he'd want us to have a moment of silence for all those lost on and because of that terrible day.

For Engineer, Demoman, Heavy, and of course, Sniper.
