Liner Ch.3 (4)

1.

August, 1967.

My name is Claire, and I plan on dying today.
They killed him.
We didn’t attack them and they killed him.
It’s just me and the new guy now; I think he’s asleep.

I just wanted and education, although I guess that was a stupid wish. Even if I made it into Harvard like my parents wanted I wouldn’t ever get a decent job; I’d never make in the real world as a female lawyer. It isn’t enough to graduate from high school when you’re fourteen, it isn’t enough to be able to recite the entire Constitution from memory and be able to translate it into Latin, both literal and grammatical versions. It isn’t enough; you need to have a penis. My entire life I’ve been put down for everything.
“Claire, you’ll never make it.”
“Claire, you’ll never have breasts.”
“Claire, you look like a little boy.”
“What an ugly nose Claire, hooked noses are gross.”
“What’sa matter Claire, can’t take the pressure to succeed?”
“You’re the reason your mother left me Claire.”
“You’re the reason your father cheated on me Claire, you made me fat.”
“Why ya’ cryin’ Claire, not MAN enough?”

I heard him screaming in the room above this little basement, I couldn’t come up. I wanted to save him; oh God did I want to save him. When I broke my nose he patched me up, he told me I was beautiful and he kissed me like I meant something. I could listen to him talk for hours about human biology, his accent barely showing. He was an immigrant, and much older than me, but I didn’t care. He was the only person I told I was a woman. When he asked how old I was I told him I was sixteen, and it didn’t bother him. I heard him screaming in another language as he tried to get the bullet out of his belly. He escaped, but I know that he’s dead, I can feel it.
This new guy is a lot like me, he isn’t who he says he is. He told us he was a replacement for Jimmy, and nobody questioned him. I looked under his mask; he’s a very handsome man. I’ll leave this for him, tucked in his many notes.
My father hated me, and I, in turn, hated him.
He did teach me how to build cars though, and I remember this one time he was messing with the fuel line and it blew flaming gasoline onto[---]*

1. Gasoline tank- found one in the storage room
2. Igniter- found an old stove lighter in kitchen
3. Nozzle- cut one off the gas pumps in back lot
4. Hose- took out the water heater main
5. Electrical tape- found in storage
6. Tube- used the connector for the windshield wiper fluid on the old truck
7. Gasoline- used tube to siphon gas from old truck
8. Air compressor- found a small one in storage room, used for cattle guns.
9. Brackets- found plenty in storage

I loved him.

*The rush of inspiration stopped her from ever finishing this sentence, and it’s a shame because I really wanted to know what happened with her Father.
**The presence of [---] is an indication of unreadable material, I only found this piece of paper after I spilled coffee on my notes. One can only imagine the missing ingredients, although I’m fairly positive the one involving burning fumes is referring to the gas mask. This scrap is the birthplace of the most feared weapon in that entire conflict. I hear that when they recovered the weapon from Claire’s body it was so badly damaged that they had to remake it, and without the original parts or instructions, they had to use propane. When I went searching around the base that night I found large chunks of Styrofoam scattered with very large portions cut out of the. What made the original weapon so devastating is that the fire would stick and burn. Claire made a weapon that spread something a lot like Napalm. The use of propane later gave the weapon a further range, but did not have the devastating effect of constant and almost irremovable burn.

I decided to make Ch.3 a letter from Charlie/Claire.

3.

very nice, i like hearing from someone other than our spy, no offence of course. it was very interesting and sounded accurate. i love it when people explain things, like the whole "pyro's a girl!" thing and how the flame thrower was built. lovely.
