"Back in my years at Hobart we had an exchange student living in our dormitory. Said his name was Emil and that he was from Romania, or something. He was a right fellow. Had some good times, him and I. I always had his back and he had mine. Wasn't like the other mates I had, he was always round and up for a good time, always had the best stock of booze. Said he had it imported from Italy every week. Wondered occasionally where he got the kind of dough for it but never thought to ask.

Wouldn't know what you'd call our kind of friendship. Got really far gone and kissed him at a party once. First time kissing a man, and that was just right and good with us, never became heavy, and that next year we were roommates.

He only had a box of assorted junk with him. Thought it a bit strange, thought he'd have more but he just smiled like the privileged jackass he was and said that's how he lived. End of the year came up and we got our gradecards. Well, I did. Emil didn't.

We talked about hunting back home. He only did small game, so I took him home with me for vacation and he said that was good with his folks. Showed him how to properly handle a rifle.

Told him how to aim. How to shoot. And it was at my very own home I explained to him EVERYTHING that could make a shot go awry.

Didn't see much of him after that summer. Never came back to the US.

17 years later I realized being his mate was the biggest mistake of my life."

O-oh no. I am INTRIGUED. And by intrigued, I mean desperately wanting more.

On the drawing, it really twists my gut. They look so happy and just having a good time like regular college boys. Looove it.

"That would explain why the bastard never got a gradecard, was always available, and had so few items in his possession. Why he always knew how to fool my teammates into thinking he was me. He was a good shot. He'd been practicing. He knew my style and knew how to use it against me because I had bloody handed it to him.

That mongrel's thankful he hadn't asked for a kiss or I would have shot him dead right then and there."

I've missed your art, Noble. Either I didn't lurk enough or you haven't posted reciently.

But, to the more important bit, I'm fangirling SO HARD over the possibility of a Romanian Spy. That's just... so hot to me.

This is excellent, and I'm eagerly anticipating more! Just one little problem; Sniper, plus Hobart, it's obviously set in Australia. Then at the end of the first post you say Spy "never came back to the US". I'm figuring you meant either never came back to AU, or never came back *from* the US.

"Shouldn't have even touched on that one. Made me wonder more, made the gears turn. Made me more jealous than I'd like to admit. Surely it couldn't have ALL been an act. I didn't wanna believe it, beyond that suspicion you get when you're young and daft that all of your friends have grown up or settled, discarding their explorations and their shortcomings, mistakes and experiences, plain pretending they haven't happened. I entered that stage when Emil disappeared.

And it was in that first few seconds of his return I realized there had never been an Emil, and that I was back to being no more positive about myself than I was as a schoolboy." - 1964
