I'm not totally averse to the idea of Hetalia when it's put in the hands of fanartists who do the concept justice, so I'm very okay with this.

From what I can tell, OP is actually pretty good. The only thing that bothers me is the fact that their faces look pasted onto the original Heavy and Scout's bodies. Nothing about it feels like Hetalia or whatever it is that thing's called. To me, it just looks like generic animu faces, y'know?

But that might be because I don't know anything about Hetalia.

Holy shit, emzy, that coming from you means a lot.

This too, thank you.
I wouldn't have posted this, really, but there's been lots of crossing over lately and those Kingdom Hearts ones were well received. I'd put KH and Hetalia pretty even on the weeaboo scale. Apparently I was wrong. I'll start a new thread later for non-crossover things.
>> No. 14636
Great minigun and nice pose on Russia, but it's a definate N from me. And I like America's pose too, but maybe it'd look more dynamic if the right leg was bent back a bit more?

Because Hetalia.

Can I pick N for neutral? I like this picture, but I'm not the biggest fan of Hetalia or animu in general. I feel like I'm parroting what emzy said, but if I wasn't told it was Hetalia I would probably just say "oh scoot with glasses and heavy with hair."

Just sayin'. Apologies if I sound like a bitch.

I have never watched this series, so I can't really have an opinion. I do like the drawing though.

FUCK. NO.

Oh, Hetalia sends me into such an incoherent rage, you have no idea.

That said, if it didn't make me rage, it'd be a kinda cute idea and you do draw well, soooo...please. Sit and stay a while. Just...draw something not THAT.

Sage because HETALIA IS EVERWHERE AND I REFUSE TO LET IT CREEP INTO MY LAST BASTION OF FANDOM.

I have no interest in seeing animu crossover art. I think the drawing shows potential, but the subject matter is ugh. Also, their poses are very static and their expressions are unrelated to whatever unclear actions they're doing. The minigun looks nice, but you could exaggerate the weight of it with the Heavy's stance some more.
>> No. 14647
You guys sure hate animu huh. Like really hate animu.

I can understand if the artist makes the faces all look the same or something but really, it isn't THAT bad an art style.
>> No. 14649

It's made pretty fucking clear that animu is, by and large, not tolerated on the chan. I don't understand why this is so difficult to grasp or accept. We're not doing it to personally insult your tastes and if you FEEL insulted, perhaps you should consider finding a hobby that causes less subconscious guilt. That aside, animu is not a fucking style, it's a goddamn medium. Lots of animu have really great art styles. Hetalia, whatever other redeeming traits it /might/ have, is not one of those. In fact it suffers from exactly what you pointed out: generic cute faces that all blur together. Most of us here like TF2 because of how distinctive and well designed the characters are, so...uh...yeah, animu is gonna get a rather cool reception. Shocking, I know.
>> No. 14650
>>14647

We never said the OP was bad. On the contrary, we've said she has potential, and that she's pretty fucking good. But honestly, can you look at that Heavy's face and tell me it looks like it belongs there? Or that it has any distinct features. You just can't, man. He looks like he's about to eat a goddamn sandvich, except he's lifting that minigun and is about to gun that poor Scout down. It just doesn't fit. Most animu styles and TF2 just don't fit together, anon.

However, there are the exceptions. Azer grabbed that style by the horns and made it her bitch, taking exactly what she wanted from it and made it something ELSE entirely. So it's not like ALL aspects of animu are bad.

Yeah I'm pretty much in agreement with everyone here. I'm not fond of APH even though I've never really watched it. Still the damn thing is just fucking EVERYWHERE.

But you do have skill so I hope you're not discouraged from drawing or posting here.

Weeeeell... to be honest I despise the Hetalia fandom. It's horrible, that's a trufax. I've tried to watch the animu but it was fucking ugly and lazy and I could go on how it was even more horrible and stupid than most of the fandom. Some art and ideas that were born within it are very good tho. And I had a feeling that sooner or later someone's going to cross TF2 with Hetalia. But face it: TF2 cast is over9000 times more manly than... this. It just won't work! Although I can kinda sorta picture Spy as France... But OP has a nice style for the other parts of the body and a knack for dynamic poses, so please stay and draw, just try something different.

What's more important than just "decent anatomy" is putting the figures into interesting poses. Or having fluid, confident line quality. Or an attractive style. Decent anatomy is just the foundation on which you build a good picture.

And what makes a drawing "worse" is completely subjective. How it resonates with its audience is all you can measure, and that much is clear in this case.

ChemicalAlia is right, animu is really fucking ugly so there's no place for this bullshit around here even if it's not technically against the rules. It would be nice if you could just make it a rule. I'd like to know what is and isn't wanted here, and not just from firsthand experience. It'd be more convenient for all of us.

Coming here I didn't know there was an accepted rule that we all had to be a hivemind and have the exact same tastes and be unable to tolerate styles that we don't personally like.

What?

Just because someone posts in the style doesn't mean that they want to force everyone else to post in the style. You don't have to like it, just don't post in the thread if the style isn't your thing. It's not like there are subdivisions of western art that don't tickle my fancy.

Yeah, I'm not going to try and start wank or anything so I'm not going to continue this argument, but it just seems a little unreasonable to me to disallow a style you don't like just because it's a style you don't like.
>> No. 14746
I am feeling kind of bad for the artist, since this drawing isn't that bad. They just happened to make an OP post with some unfortunate subject matter.

If it's any consolation, OP, I got my stuff ripped into pretty bad posting here for he first time too, and I improved because of it. Also, I have some rather... questionable taste in animu myself.

You show real potential, though. I'd like to see you try and draw the TF2 characters and play around with a non-animu style.

I really don't want to feed into an arguement, but I feel the need to put in my 2 cents.

Chitin, you have a lot of talent, but you used it in a way that makes people here...rageface. I, personaly, hate Hetalia because it's spreading around to evry single fandom like the freakin' bubonic plague.
Now, I happen to be a big fan of Annie-May, but not the kind that is generic, re-used, stereotypical unoriginal drivle. There's a plethora of Manga and animu series that are magnificient. You just have to do it right. It's hard for allot of people to get good at the manga style, because they immediately go for the generic style. What you need to to is create your own varient- animu is still animu no matter what size the eyes are or how kawaii desu ne it is. There is good animu, ok animu, and horrable unorigonal animu.

You have talent and I'm sure that if you tweaked you drawings a little bit, so that it's YOUR style of animu and not the overly-popular style, you could make allot of great manga-esque drawings without making people cranky about it.

I'm not saying that it's right or wrong to the people bashing on animu, I have a strict neutral posision on everything I can help for a reason. Some people are bigots, some people are excepting, and some people want their predispositions chalenged. You just have to find your niche.
And if you can't manage your own unique twist to the animu medium, than maybe you should start experimenting with your own style. I've seen lots of Manga artist draw some really great stuff in a completely differant style, and there's always the western-influenced style of animu.

but like I said- You have talent and I can tell you work hard. Just try to be a bit more origonal, is all.

...people, please don't hurt me...

>it just seems a little unreasonable to me to disallow a style you don't like just because it's a style you don't like

using that as a point to go from but aimed at this discussion generally: the problem with the "style" of animu is that quite a lot of the time, it's used as a shorthand, lazy way of working around the things artists should actually be attempting to improve on, like anatomy, proportions, facial structure and expressions, posing, etc ad infinitum. Obviously this isn't always the case, and some people are able to work aspects of what would traditionally be considered animu style into their work while maintaining quality.

But generally, people (and their art) would be better served by drawing from life and taking some art classes rather than mimicking animu and clinging to it under the excuse that it's your "style." it's perfectly possible to have a style that is done well and still shows influence of animu (insert another shout-out to Azer here) but this comes from studying art, getting a firm grasp of the basics first, and incorporating quirky things like that later so you can make them your own.

When you rely too heavily on animu's style, you end up with sameface, which absolutely doesn't fit with TF2. One of the great things about the design of the game is how each class is distinct, in jawlines and noses and all those other great things we call facial features, which help you keep track of which dude is your boyfriend and which is your brother without needing things like crazy hair colours to help distinguish 'em.

Chitin, I'd be quite curious to see more from you- is this your usual style? 'cause I just tried covering the faces in this picture, and looking at it only like that I don't think I would've guessed there were animu faces hiding there. I think you've got some skills, and I'd like to see what else you can do with them. sorry this thread has turned kind of chaotic, but please don't let it scare you off!

Um...couldn't the same be said of ANYONE who says 'I don't need to learn realism first, it's cartoony style'? animu isn't the only simplification, western cartoons do it too just in a different style, right?
