Apologies for the interruption/fail, lurker here, deciding to share some doodles of my personified Sentry. There are more to come, so it's not just animu styled sketches of him.

The idea of a human sentry is certainly interesting.

Ignore this faggot, please.

Ok, as you might know, anything that looks like a general animu style is snubbed here. I'm not telling you to start drawing in a different style just to appeal to this site, but I would suggest that you post in the critique section first if you're nervous about posting. They will definitely help you out there with references, facial structures and whatnot.

Also, this is just me, but self depreciation sounds like fishing. Try to avoid it since it attracts people who make unhelpful posts or say something like "lol animu" or whatever.

I like this idea. ANDROID ENGINEER AND SENTRY, YES.

>>16892

Seconding because I starting typing the exact same thing before I realized someone did it for me. Lawl

Yeah, this is good advice.

I sorta like the idea of a human/humanoid sentry myself, but to be honest I never would have made any conection between this character and a sentry if you hadn't said so. I'd suggest looking at the sentry designs closely, seeing if you can find ways to make the character more like one. If I was doing it, I'd personally make the skin metal and probably emphasize the robotic nature by giving it slightly inhuman anatomy, 'dead' eyes, that sort of thing. Because this little guy seems cute, passive, expressive and vulnerable, which is pretty much the opposite of the machine he's based on.

You can start by not cribbing NerfNow's shit.
>> No. 16907
Ah, well, to be totally honest, I'm partially basing him off the whole 'Meet the Sentry' video. I understand what you mean by making him seem more machine like, which I'm trying to focus on doing. He's still a rough draft, so I appreciate the suggestions. My drawing style has always been on the more cute side of things, so this is a new one for me. Again, thanks guys for suggestions, I'm going to return to some of my references and work on incorporating more qualities of a Sentry into him.

Good animu style- that is, someone with good fundamentals- is fine. It's crappy 'i'm fifteen and omg i can draw so kawaii!~~~' that is frowned. Same for crappy western styles. This isn't rocket science. It's just that the internet is more infested with the animu.

>>16896
Also listen to this person. Look at the style a real sentry has- the smooth lines and bright colors don't lend themselves to something so, uh. like that. Look at fashion, look at machinery, look at what makes people go, 'oh, a sentry'.

pic only vaguely related- gijinka are a lot like -tans, I guess? v(._.)v who cares i love this sableye.
>> No. 16909
I highly suggest you look at sentinels and various robots to get a feel for this -tan. remember it is a weapon...

Yes. I failed to mention this.

I am looking back at my references and applying more qualities to the design. I'm starting to get concerned I might have too much of an Iron Man thing going on with this design, but it's better than before.

Basicaly - what everyone else said.

"Dad, I got sapped again" made me laugh my ass off though.

Now I kinda want to try my hand at Sentry-tan. There could be three, for the various levels of Sentry. Also, Dispenser-tan would be adorable and chubby.
>> No. 16918
To be honest, I was considering making three designs for a Sentry, this one posted as Lvl. 1, and make the design more mature and serious as the levels progressed. And I considered a Dispenser-tan, but I found the design was a bit plain when I finished.

I went back to my old references and worked with some of those as well as some suggestions that were offered and came up with a couple of ideas, and started working with those. I'm aware of how a few things are anatomically incorrect (I noticed after inking). I removed the bangs, because all in all, regardless of whether it was animu style or not, it was making him look a lot more childish. Advice in other areas that need improvement will be greatly appreciated.

Use this thread, people are very helpful and will red line for you to show you how to improve.

Trust me, the red liners are awesome.

wow, you're OP? i can see a vast amount of improvement between the two drawings, so good job!

it looks like you tried to go for a Megaman feel. i think it's okay, but ask the others who are more hardcore about stuff like this what they think...
>> No. 16947
Yes, I am. Thank you for the encouragement. I'll probably hop over to the other thread in the morning, or after I finish this paper. Again, thank you for the critique everyone.

That's a big improvement, now he's looking much more serious and sentry-like. Loving his head and jaw shape here, it makes him look robotic without being immediately obvious. And it's good you're going to the critique thread, hopefully they'll help you improve more.

This topic has caught my attention.I couldn't help but draw up a few ideas, see if you like them. Also, you can also do something like this (Beware Animu alert)http://www.flickr.com/photos/ninjascience/sets/72157594158215338/?page=2 to him. As for chest and legs look at some gundam stuff or even medabots to get an idea how you can fit the geometry in there. Here, have another link.

Safetybunny, would you mind if I borrowed some of your ideas? I like the concept of a gun in the mouth. (Despite it sounding well, kinda you know.) I actually had a friend of mine--who I seriously can only get off TF2 to go to class, unlike myself--to judge the redesign. He was pretty much breathing down my back to monitor progress.

on a slightly-related note, I did one for Portal. Companion cube needs work on a day where I actually give a fuck. Also, needs to be less weeaboo.

Holy fuck I'm surprised this hasn't started a shitstorm/been locked/something else

>>16944
This is definitely a lot better. Way more sentry-like, though I'd like to see a few more wires, as per the back of a level 2/3 sentry.
>> No. 17012
Thank you, I was thinking about adding more wires to the next sketch. (As for the not starting a shitstorm, I'm guessing it's because I know how to take critique. Heh~)

I love the concept of a personified Sentry... kinda makes me want to write, but idk if /fanfic/ would be all flowers and bunny sparkles over it. They're a confusing bunch sometimes.

Anyway, the "Dad, I got sapped again" made me laugh for a long while... I like how your drawing style has impoved through the critiques here and am glad that you're listening to people. Keep it up~
