Wooo an official art thread. Like I said after doing my initial intro, I felt weird having somebody else's meme be the first thing in my personal art thread, so here we go. I'm gonna try to keep as much as possible in this one, I promise.

A bunch of sketches to start off with, 'cos I'm still learning how to draw the characters. I hate how I drew half of everybody in that meme now, so inaccurate, hah. Much closer to how I see some of 'em here, though they still need work. God the upper-left ones kinda make me cringe now, they're missing the backs of their heads and theirs faces are waaay too long. Even Sniper's. Oh well.

I didn't want a huge thing of blather showing in the first post, so some notes:

- I actually see Spy as being very battered underneath his mask. I mean really, the majority of the guys on the Team are wearing some sort of armor and/or protective clothing, and spend most of their time at a distance shooting off big guns and explosives. Spy's just a guy in a suit. Sure he's got a handgun, but it's mostly knives and hand-to-hand combat with him. Between the Pyro Spy-checks, electrical sparks and mishaps of sapping, duels with enemy Spies and various explosions and nasty situations in close quarters, all far away from a Medic, even a top-notch Spy won't come out unscathed. The balaclava is probably a mix of secret identity/stealth stuff and embarrased vanity.

- While they hate their opposite-Team equivalents with a passion, I bet same-Team Sniper and Spy would be good friends. In an Odd Couple "spend most of the time arguing and bitching at each other" way. I can see them as little old elderly men sitting on a park bench, cackling and making fun of the people that go by.

- I am greatly amused by the fact that Sniper's the tallest in-game model, and cartoony exaggeration aside is probably equal to or nearly as tall as Heavy. Super-tall lanky characters are one of my favorite character design types, especially when there are short dudes for them to hang out with. I always snicker at Spy's entrance in Meet The Spy, because the poor guy's just lugging around this massive pile of gangly limbs. All you can see are LEGS THAT GO ON FOREVER. I bet you Sniper's shades are prescription, too.

- Engie is one "need a table here" joke away from punching somebody in the groin. Because he's short, you see.

Sniper would be Statler, naturally. He's taller.

While waiting on some baking tonight, I wound up drawing a young Swing Kid!Medic. I really liked the idea, what can I say. I can totally see Medic as having been a fairly normal kid who might've wanted to be a doctor, getting dragged off at a swing club raid and forced into the army as a field medic or something. All the stuff he'd wind up seeing and taking part in making his mind snap a little, turning him grumpy and a little weird.

Spy discovered a French restaurant had just opened in the nearest big city and forced everybody to dress up and drive several hours for a fancy night out. Several people needed help figuring out ties. Someone is not pleased that they don't get to lord it over someone else with the "see I *told* you it'd be good but you didn't believe me" act.

Spy is using his Spytron 3000 to look presentable in public. Scout's suit is probably rented, and Sniper's suit is probably ten years old and smells like mothballs. There is a good chance the restaurant owner will regret everything he's ever done in life.

A couple little Sniper sketches, 'cos I was trying to get his dumb face's design down. I think I finally got it!

Apricot TF2 Theory #37: Sniper's sunglasses are secretly prescription. He never takes the damn things off! Seriously who brushes their teeth indoors while wearing sunglasses. I'm amused at his bit in Meet The Spy 'cos his glasses get knocked askew and despite being a pretty big guy with a big goddamn knife in a very small enclosed space all his flailing *still* can't hit the Spy. Here's a whole bunch of extremely rough, loose and half-assed little doodles. It's pretty much just me getting lots of dumb things out of my head so I can focus on better drawings and ideas.

I sure hope the bases have AC (or at least lots of fans), 'cos it struck me today that quite a lot of the cast is pretty over-dressed for heavy exertion outdoors in the baking desert heat.

Also, that Engie & Spy incident was completely embarrasing and totally hilarious all at once. Sonnuvabitch couldn't backstab me with my back to the column so he hid on my head! Unfortunately, all that time alone in the desert and in sniper nests on missions has probably destroyed his social skills. Mutters to himself all the time, has questionable hygiene, inflicts that hygiene on others, etc. He lives in a small van and I...I don't think that van has any plumbing. I don't get that, he's peeing in a jar, not all over himself.

I personally beleive that Sniper takes care of himself well. And the jar thing...if he actually left to piss...he'd never get to shoot anyone, and would probably get killed several times a day.

I still think that picture is fucking hillarious, though.

It's not so much the pee as the flinging of the pee at people. Including his own teammates. And on himself, when the situation dictates. He carries that pee everywhere! He's so proud of that pee.

Don't get me wrong, Sniper's my favorite character of the whole bunch, I think he's a cool dude. But he's definitely got a skeevy feel to him at times, poor bloke. Though I will own up to the toothbrush thing, haha. It'd probably be pretty funny if he partakes in most types of hygiene and the inside of his van is actually very clean and organized, leaving his team very perplexed.

Made me giggle way more than it should've.

I feel kinda bad about going so OTT with the "lol he's so gross" now, hahaha. I drew him waaay too creepy in that last one in retrospect. Let's pretend Spy really did hold that intervention and he's a lot more presentable (and less smelly) now. Still scruffy and socially awkward, though.

Hmm, he'd probably be okay towards normal animals like cats and dogs, but I dunno how Sniper'd be towards wild animals, 'specially Australian ones. Okay okay enough of that dumb crappy half-assed doodling, let's have an honest attempt at art here. Color an' everything.

I bet Engie and Sniper would be real good chums. They seem to have similar temperaments, and they're both outdoors-y country boys that enjoy a good campout (blood optional). A sketch that got away from me and fancied up a bit. Practicin' my Spy drawin'.

I love how goddamn dainty Spy is compared to the rest of the Team. The prissiness, the skinny stick insect legs, the dainty little hands and feet. Turns out Spy's got the tiniest hands of the nine (i.e. they're normal-sized hurf), even Scout's hands are bigger. That was amusing to notice when looking at a character lineup for reference.

Not exactly Next Scene, but close enough.

Why do so many people draw Sniper's van as this huge thing full of tons of furniture and equipment and so on? I've seen campers like the one he's got in 'Meet The...' in real life, it's basically just a pickup truck with a box stapled on the back. Can't be much room in there for anything but a mattress, a chest or two and a few odds and ends. For all the money he makes I don't think Sniper's got much in the way of material goods.

The whole book is about an Engineer waiting for the Spy at the end of the book, and he's terrified, shaking in his boots.

So he builds a mess of Sentry guns to deter the reader from pressing on. But it's no use. He begs the reader to stop turning the pages.

Then the last page, he saps all the equipment and stabs a teammate in the back "HON HON HON HON HON, It seems /I/ was the spy at the end of the book all along! HON HON HON HON!"
