Hmm, some people scan their pictures, print them out and then start to color. Printerink doesn't smudge and you can print the outlines out again when you made a mistake. However, I think that's just useful when you color a bigger picture with more details.
However, don't use the goddamn Copic-paper and their Multiliner. The Copic-paper doesn't suck out the ink out of the markers like a sponge, that's true, but after 4-5 layers it gets hard to add another layer and the paper is really thin. And the Copic-Multiliner still smudge and when you erase your pencil lines the outlines nearly disappear.
I usually use Watercolor-paper (not too thick, or your markers bleed out faster than you think) and normal ink. When you don't like inking, use a technical pen or a "Rapidograph" by Rotring. It's like using a normal pen, but with india ink inside. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technical_pen At least my outlines didn't smudge anymore since using the Rapidograph.
Use coloured pencils/pencil crayons for adding extra depth and subtle shadows :)
Uhm...I hope I didn't write too much, but using the right stuff from the very first avoids paying too much money for not working stuff (like those goddamn Copic-Multiliner, argh).
And sorry for my horrible English today, I hope you did understand everything I've said~
