Oh man, that's gorgeous.
If I had any critique it would be that their feet seem a little underwhelming, size-wise.
Am I to take it you'll be following some the general consensus of the recent chess thread in /dis/? Although you have already deviated. Either way, I am excite.

Nope, I actually was unaware of that thread -- I've been planning Chess Fortress for several months, and posted a teaser picture for it on my tumblr back on November 9th, so I'm afraid I've already had all the pieces assigned for quite some time now! So I can't really make any adjustments for the chess discussion going on there. I'm afraid none of the chess pieces I've assigned line up with the suggestions on the /dis/ thread.

I HOPE MY SELECTIONS WILL NOT DISAPPOINT

Oh gosh, I wouldn't expect you to make adjustments. If your first pic is any indication, they'll all be awesome.

Gunpowder, gelatine, dynamite with a laser beam, guaranteed to blow your mind. Half the pencils for Sniper -- the other half are being redrawn.

Thank you guys so much for your kind comments! The feet on Spy I knew were a bit tiny -- actually that was intentional, since in-game he does have tiny-ass feet, but in retrospect it doesn't come across as "trying to do game proportions" because the rest of the picture isn't so much. So thank you!

I find that his hands are a bit awkward, especially his left hand (I think he needs longer, maybe a bit meatier fingers) but otherwise I find this sketch awesome and beautiful.

I cannot wait to see a final product for this :)

Not gonna lie, I see more CLAMP than Mucha in your works. Might be because of the sweeping, almost feminine regalia. But it's beautiful work nevertheless.

I see a lovely combination of both CLAMP and Mucha.

Question; If there are 6 different pieces to a chess game, and this is, as you say, a series of 9, then what are you going to find for all 9 classes?

(Sorry for making everyone think there was an update.)

The split breaks down like so:

King
Queen
Bishop
Knight
Rook
King's/Queen's Pawn
Bishop's Pawn
Knight's Pawn
Rook's Pawn

(no, Soldier's helmet doesn't actually look like this.) Thank you guys for your patience that it's taking me so long to get back to working on these! I've had a ton of commissions due that have basically been eating up all of December and January.

Holy cow, those Snipers are gorgeous! Loving the leather vests trimmed in gold they're wearing.

Hoping to see Medic as King but I have a feeling Demoman will take the crown, which I am fine with.

It looks pretty bloody good.
My only suggestion (i don't know if you want concrit anyway. Feel free to tell me to bugger off) But composition wise my eye is being drawn off the page. I would reason it's because white sniper is facing outward. Subconsciously his facing that direction leads the eye in the direction he's facing. And because he's so close to the edge this works against the composition. In the same way that if i didn't want you to look at something, i would turn away from it. It would be more harmonious to have him facing inward thus directing the eye back into the centre of the page. Or even moving him more to the left and having a separate directional object leading you back into the 'action' so to speak. Something like that.
Ideally you want the eye to follow a set of subtle directions within the drawing (Like the direction of his staff or the belt ribbons, or like i said the way the figures are facing) so they continue going round in the picture. If that makes sense. At the moment my eyes go to black sniper, his cup, white sniper, his cup and the straight of the page. There's a lot of direction leading to the bottom left corner, that's where my eyes go unfortunately, because the rest is pretty amazing..

Aaaaanyway it's still damn good. i love all the little sniper motifs and the stars are a nice symbolic touch ;) Cant wait to see more :D

Concrit is quite welcome! I don't generally respond to a lot of it, because once I've finished a picture, making major changes isn't really in the cards -- but what I always try to do is take that crit into account for my future work.

Compositionally you're correct, this picture suffers a lot. The one change I could make which would lessen this a bit would be to actually scale the snipers down a bit -- right now white Sniper's anchored very close to the edges of the canvas in general -- but there'd still be a lot of movement leading to Sniper's hand and down through his pouring jarate. Switching his gloves to the lighter gold tone and lightening the jarate to a paler color would also both help, as would simplifying the shape of the running liquid at bottom left -- but ultimately not fix the overall off-the-page movement compositionally. This picture balanced itself much better in lineart, which is a lesson to me to block in some basic colors before I start inking, so I can see if the picture's still balancing once it's got blocks of color in it. Your crit was really helpful -- thank you!

I don't think liquid works like that.

The stylization is part of the Art Nouveau look and feel and adds to the overall appearance of the piece.
