Just finished making my own version of the RED logo cake for my birthday.
I saw one around before the 'chan blew up and decided I really wanted to make it. It's not perfect but I'm proud of it.

Four layers of sponge cake (Because two would've made it too small), jam and icing in the middle, rolling icing for the top, sides, RED letters and class logos and little sugar letters.

So yeah, it's not just Medic crosses, I managed to make the lot of their icon things.

I gotta say, you did a terrific job. I've never used this "rolling icing" you speak of, but frosting in general is a major bitch to work with (I made a Dr. Venture cake a few years back using normal frosting and a tube of black gel for outlines, and I ended up having to do his face twice, because a jar of peanut butter fell out of the cupboard and destroyed it...), so the fact that the letters look so good blows me away.

Perhaps I should look into this rolling icing, because it looks a lot easier to fix if it gets smudged up. It's not the same thing as fondant, is it? I've heard that stuff tastes awful.

Fondant just tastes like pure sugar. It is a lot easier to work with, since it's like play dough. Most bakers tend to prefer it, but... it really tastes like sugary play-dough that you can eat.

I'm British so I don't know where you lot would get it from, but it comes in these massive slabs that need kneeding before you can roll them.
I don't know what fondant icing is, sorry, blame it on my limeyness. I think it might be what AtrumLupus is describing. I know I like it.

For all we know, Fondant and 'Rolling Icing' could be the same thing. It sounds a lot alike, but I could be wrong.
Screw small culture and language barriers, I bet the cake tastes great!
