I think something in my heart broke a little. I always find it painful when someone or something makes Engie cry, but for some reason, someone or something making Solly cry is even worse. Like a kick to the balls, if I had balls.

Why can't we see Solly's whole face though? Is it because you didn't want to draw him crying? I'm not pointing it out because I don't like it, I was just thinking whether it was intentional or just turned out like that. I think it's still an interesting detail which contributes to the picture's awesomeness.

It's very much intentional. Things like composition, staging, framing, cropping are often very deliberate choices for me, to generate interest, incite an emotion, etc, etc.

My headcanon dictates that Soldier's helmet is something not just protecting what little brain he has, but serving as a wall to distance himself from other people. When he doesn't wear his helmet, I see him as being emotionally exposed, going with the whole "eyes are the gateway into the soul" idea.

Anyway, so in that scene, Soldier was lacking his helmet, but he was retreating back into himself after getting figuratively cut deep by Engineer's actions. To get this idea across visually, I cropped the image off right where the helmet would have covered his eyes anyway. So the edge of the frame serves to signify Soldier shutting himself off.

I'm now of the mind that if wearing his helmet is putting a wall up and taking it off is revealing himself on an emotional level, those images where he's wearing his helmet AND you can see his eyes are akin to an animal peering out of its den to see if the coast is clear.
