13146 No. 13146
Was on Tumblr just now. The majority of people think this was a huge mistake for valve to put these hats out (especially the Medic "German commander" hat). Opinions?

I actually liked them until I thought about the unfortunate implications, and now I just feel uncomfortable...

I think they could use better names, at least.
>> No. 13148
They're very well-made (although they look too close to the Team Captain and the Wiki Cap), but I really don't like the implications either. I think the game needs to stay away from German WWII allusions entirely.
>> No. 13151
I just think Valve lately needs to lighten the fuck up. It's Team Fortress. They need more Nazi references, but, like, Nazi references about Hitler's artistic aspirations and how ridiculous people look when they're goosestepping. Stop with this holocaust mask, Russian winter hat shit. Get your srs bsns out of my glorified fish slapping dance.

Like this. We need more NAZI references like this.
>> No. 13153
Not to play devil's advocate here, but aren't references to the Stalin-era USSR just about as disturbing as references to Nazi-era Germany? Both were pretty horrible places with pretty horrible leaders.
>> No. 13155
I always thought Medic was intended to be a comedic Nazi character, and they decided to change it later when that was clearly a less than good idea. Funny Nazis can work, especially in something that uses as much dark comedy as TF2. Hell, Funny Nazis were even fairly popular in the era the game is set, such as Hogan's Heros, The Producers and even Dr. Strangelove.

First the Track Terrorizer tantrum and now this, I'd be interested to see if some people do start dropping out of the fandom.
>> No. 13156
I honestly don't know how to feel about this. I'm really conflicted

This was a...bad idea.
>> No. 13158
I think the issue lies more with the choice of names than anything. As >>13151 mentioned, they look like other hats already and there are other hats in TF2 also based on WWII headgear. I don't recall anyone getting upset about those. I think everyone just needs to calm the fuck down.
>> No. 13159
>>13155
Only the people who get hysterical over 'social justice' and take the hats TF2 characters wear as canon proof of their involvement with Nazis/the mob/cross-dressing/Elvis impersonation/Sam&Max/shitloads of other games released over steam.
>> No. 13160
It was hilarious watching people on tumblr freaking out because of cosmetic items, some even said they'll delete tf2 because of that

you guys are funny
>> No. 13161
what the fuck.

First people freaking out about the track terrorizer and that medi-mask and now this? Seriously?

tumblr needs to get the fuck over itself.

(And maybe Valve is doing this just to see how pissed off people get about hats. I'm kind of feeling the troll vibe, to be honest.)

Also I think the Medic's hat looks sorta stupid anyway. Like the Heavy's hat, though.
>> No. 13163
I wouldn't put this on the same level as the Track Terrorizer.

The TT was just a wacky, harmless thing that people took wayyyyy too fucking seriously.

This? This is actually gross. WTF, Valve.

Yeah, that's how I feel. I don't know. It does seem silly to get up in arms about two hats, but... C'mon. this just seems to be in bad taste. I just don't know why they would do this.

Like, it doesn't help that there's no context as to why Heavy and Medic would be wearing these. i just

i cant

help
>> No. 13165
The only thing that miffs me about this is that certain people will take this as canon "proof" that Medic was definitely a Nazi.
>> No. 13166
I'm starting to wonder if this really is a troll thing, because there hasn't been an update to actually install these into the game, or a blip about them on the blog, or anything.

Do we have any confirmation about whether or not the item descriptions are canon? Because if they're not, they're no big deal, and if they are, dude, not funny. Fictional or not, I don't like trivializing the deaths of real people (and Yang was right, the Communists even killed more than the Nazis did). I know that's an extremely unpopular opinion on the internet, though. Sadly, we're growing into a society where you get called a whiny bitch if you're not automatically cool with absolutely everything everyone does. I blame 4chan.

Soldier bought the hats for both of them and they accepted because free hats.

There.
>> No. 13171
If you're uncomfortable about it don't purchase the game, or delete the hats then. Common sense people. And Valve already stated that the Medic is NOT a Nazi! Besides, TF2 is rated M! I guess I'm not seeing the "disturbance" of these hats like some other people are seeing. They are probably referring to the medic's sadistic personality, and TF2 does take place in the 1960's when Russia was still referred to as the USSR, which is where we know the heavy is from. That's my opinion. I'm not crying about it like if were spilled milk.

Oh, they're real, but the Medic's cap is (now) called "Combat Medic's Crusher Cap" http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Combat_Medic%27s_Crusher_Cap and the Heavy's hat is "Heavy Artillery Officer's Cap" http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Heavy_Artillery_Officer%27s_Cap

I still thing everyone needs to stop with this petty bullshit.
>> No. 13173
I think that's a fine change.
>> No. 13174
>>13172
Alright, I approve of the change. I like the idea that they'd wear their great-grandfathers' stuff in their honor, or that Medic's job runs in the family. I never had a real issue with the Iron Cross bit, Germany wore them in the Franco-Prussian War and WWI, and still today.
>> No. 13175
>>13172
Yeah, I like this change, too. Good job, Valve.

I didn't have a problem with the TT, but, I don't know. It just seems kinda weird that they would give a German character that was probably old enough to fight in WWII a cap from that era. That's just poor taste, no matter how you dress it up. We can debate about "canon" (which isn't even being discussed, honestly!), or other hats that are ridiculous, but nothing else can send that uncomfortable of a message.

And really, the "Don't like, don't look!" argument doesn't cut it here. Only the most extreme are talking about deleting TF2 from their computers - there's nothing wrong with just being a concerned fan. As long as you conduct yourself with dignity I guess.

The same feelings for Heavy, I guess, because Stalin was even more of a shithead, but Stalin was just... crazy and paranoid. To my knowledge, he wasn't trying to perform genocide on a specific race - he was just nuts. Doesn't make the amount of death caused by him any less abhorrent, though - it's just that... Nazis were a more iconic form of evil, you know?

Ugh, heebie-jeebies. Let's stop talking about these guys now. Wow. I don't even know where I was going with this. Who cares. Everyone's pretty pleased about the outcome, and if they don't, oh well.
>> No. 13176
Good. My faith in Valve is restored.

there's nothing wrong with just being a concerned fan. As long as you conduct yourself with dignity I guess.

This. People on Tumblr can be ridiculous extremist who'll cry "ZOMG OFFENSIVE!!!111" over any harmless little thing, but the opposite attitude of being cool with absolutely anything isn't much better. Deleting the game is a big overreaction, but it's entirely sensible to voice your concern if something actually tasteless happens.
>> No. 13178

> That's just poor taste

how is fighting for your country in a time of war in poorer taste than conducting unethical experiments on living human beings? or did we all just forget that medic is a mad scientist with no morality whatsoever?

There is a law some people run by with fictional characters where if they are the protagonist, they have to be the more likable one. Even if the protagonist is a criminal. That's why Dexter Morgan won't kill a child and why Don Vito Corelone is notorious for his generousity.

I think the death of fictional characters is cool to some people (because nobody gets hurt) but if you start making jokes about the death of real people, or rape, or racism, people can't empathize with them anymore. It's weird, but that's how they work.
>> No. 13182
>>13172

The item descriptions appear to be making a buffer between our beloved mercs and the atrocities those hats may have witnessed/represented. Besides that, I understand that people will feel uncomfortable with the images those hats conjure, but I am uncomfortable with completely removing them from sight.

Should we glorify these hats and the organizations they belonged to? Hell no! But if we were to hypothetically remove Nazi and Soviet imagery from games including TF2, would that not take one step towards removing the memory of them and their atrocities from the public memory? We should not glorify, but we should not forget either.
>> No. 13183
Also, does anyone here remember a particular response to the Cheater's Lament? People who didn't like the hat or objected to it replaced the model with something else. Either a blank hat or a halo spelling a rude word. What's stopping objectors from censoring these hats themselves?
>> No. 13184

You could. As I remember it was mostly whole survers that would change the hats. Also, the Cheater's Lament was given to pretty much everyone. I doubt as many people will have these hats

I don't know if shirt colour has quite the same social and cultural implications as skin colour. Sometimes I like to think of Engineer as some sort of headthumping fashionisto: "Boy, if you think it's acceptable to wear that colour with those mantreads, you should be shot."

They probably thought that the standard position would have looked too much like the Team Captain.
