Fowlie, I've always really loved you're line work and the way you use shapes to portray characters. Solly looks full of personality and tension here, and yet it's subtle. I can just imagine him physically shaking on the screen. Also, you've improved! When you go through this thread the pictures get better every time.

A question though- I'm assuming you used photoshop- did you make a sketch first and outline and color it in photoshop? Or did you go straight away to photoshop? Also, in terms of your drawing process, how do you decide what shapes fit each character? What makes you decide to draw certain characters a certain way?

Hey thanks so much! I'm glad I'm still improving! It takes me a while before I notice it in my own work.

Lets see... I'm going to be honest, I am a Luddite when it comes to computers. Every drawing or comic page I do is drawn and inked by hand on paper. With this one, I did the hatching around Solly's head by hand, but all of the black fill was done in Photoshop 7.0, as well as the little bit of tones. I don't have a terribly steady hand, so I like to do fills in PS when I need to save a lot of details in the line work, such as the hatching.

As for characters, especially drawing the TF2 characters who are all so larger then life, I had to do a lot of experimenting before settling on how I draw face shapes. A few years ago, I was given a great book called "Creating Characters With Personality" by Tom Bancroft. Its a really great book that breaks down symbols and tricks that continually show up in cartooning. It really helped me learn the basics of not just character design, but cartooning in general.
