i'm sorry if this is the wrong board to post in, but i've lurked for a long time and i really would like to post my art here. i know that things have really changed a lot here and i find you all to be quite lovely people, but i'm a little nervous because i started drawing because of anime and subsequently, transitioning away from that hasn't been easy.

i'm more than willing to accept constructive criticism, but i know how people on here feel about anime (not even gonna bother to call that a 'style') and while i would love to improve, i don't want to be torn apart.

is it okay to post my art here, even though i'm still transitioning away from anime? i don't really like hipstr because there are so few adults there that i can communicate with effectively...

btw, while on the afanart board, my roommate happened to be in here when the random flying dicks happened. without asking me what kind of chan this was, he asked me if i was looking at 'my stupid tf2 shit again'.

congratulations, guys. you've captured tf2 in a way most people dream of. (i wonder how big each respective class' dick is? huuuuuuuuuuuh. that's something to think about on a rainy day)

i am very sorry about the rick astley video. it kept telling me to use an embed url even though i didn't think i needed one, and that was the first thing that came to mind. i am ashame

I don't know about the rest of TF2chan, but my personal issue with the so-called "animesque" style is that a very homogenous, watered down version of some artsyles common to anime is adopted as a supposed way to shortcut learning how to draw, except as you have probably found out already, it ingrains some pretty horrible habits that are very hard to unlearn.

Since you actively want to improve your style and seem willing to take a few slings and arrows along with concrit, I would say go for it and post your art. I for one would be more than happy to nitpick you to death (out of a genuine desire to see you grow into your own style, whatever that turns out to be).

i didn't expect to get replied to... you guys are so nice! and funny, mawaru!

i don't have much of my art on this computer but i'll get a-postin'. it means a lot to me that you guys would be willing to help me learn how to get better. i may never be picasso, but improving on a thing i love to do always makes me happy. i hope i make new friends here!

tf2 is my passion.

Would a CYOA Thread (choose your own adventure) go in fanfiction or roleplay?
>> No. 1360
I would say probably the roleplay section. I've seen one here done in gmod a long time ago and it was a bit all over the place if I remembered correctly. If it was in the fanfiction section, it'd be a shame the board's not set up where each chapter someone does is a new page. That way, it'd be easier to click on links to choose your path. I guess it would depend on what the mods would think would be best.

A CYOA would be fun if executed properly!

Would anyone be interested in doing a Secret Santa Exchange this year?

For new members of the ‘chan, the Secret Santa Exchange is an event in December where artists and writers each create a gift (a drawing or story) for an anonymous person in the fandom and receive a gift in return. You can see last year’s gifts here:

Art: http://tf2chan.net/dis/res/11026.html
Stories: http://tf2chan.net/afanfic/res/9426.html

I’m asking because I’d volunteer to manage it, in case no one else steps forward. I’ve asked Kilo, who did an excellent job last year, and I’ve asked the TF2chan mods, but unfortunately it seems they’re all prevented from taking on the task. I’ll have the time for it in December, though, and I loved how the community came together last winter to create some amazing art and stories.

Please let me know if you’d be interested in participating. If you guys are okay with me managing it, I will post details on how to sign up in mid-November.

so idk if this is still a thing but i would love to participate in a secret santa if there is gonna be one? i have a lot of questions, most arent actually relevant to what i am going to do. but like can you ask for tf2 ocs in the secret santa, or is it just canons? if people are writing instead of drawing is there a separate thing for writers or is it all bunched together like. idk why i ask but i gotta know. i just wanna know what to expect in terms of the request of others and then what i should request myself ... yeah!! yeah

In the past it's all been together, but you can say what you're willing to fill and what you'd like to receive. Like, last year, I gifted someone a piece of writing, but I received a piece of art from someone. Personally, I always give them three prompts for adult fic, three prompts for genfic, three prompts for adult art, and three prompts for genart, and then the gifter can pick whichever of them they're comfortable with, and I still get to be surprised. I don't believe everyone does this, though, but it's not a bad idea.

I don't know the rules on OCs, though. I'm not sure if they're strictly allowed. Usually it's just canon characters, but rules change from year to year, so who knows, with this one?

And as to taking the reigns on it, I'd love to but I can't. My grandmother's in the hospital this year, and things aren't looking great, so I'd never know if I'd have to drop everything and go to a funeral. If it weren't for that, I'd take it up in an instance, and I still plan to be a participant; just not an organizer.

Excellent! I can't wait to get this going! I'll be working on my 3 prompts within the next 24hrs. I don't expect a big turn out this year being how quiet the chan's gotten but hopefully still as enjoyable! Whither small or big, this is one of the best community projects I always want to be a part of for TF2Chan!

So why is this place suddenly so dead? It was pretty active what, a year, two years ago? What in the world happened?

I miss the times when the site was more active because the format of the fanfic archive makes it a thousand times easier to find fic than it is when you're on LOOK AT THIS FUCKING HIPSTR and have to wade through personal posts and memes. The quality standards for what fic gets posted here makes it easy to find something you can enjoy reading, but I think it also scares people off from posting. Most fanfic writers aren't super serious about improving and are intimidated by criticism. (I know I would have trouble dealing with unsolicited crit on a fanfic no matter how nicely you worded it, which is why I'm a lurker.)

On the other hand, now that the site is dead, people who _do_ want critique are going to go someplace more active in search of feedback. It's a vicious cycle.

And uh, the wordfilters don't exactly make the place welcoming to newbies (or people who haven't been here in a while).

How come we don't have a delicious archive for TF2 fanfiction? It'd make shit a hell of a lot easier to find.

'The Lurker's Guide to TF2 Chan' exists. It's a by-author index of the entire TF2 Chan afanfic section. I tried to post a link, but it's on over on t_mb1r, and the link gets auto-destroyed by this site's editing/word-replace system.

What about a giant googledoc spreadsheet? You can make those, right? I feel like I made one when I stage managed did A Christmas Carol.

Because then you could have everything sorted by title, author, character A, character B, etc., rating, additional tags.

This is something I've mentioned before, but I figured I may as well post it here. Hopefully this won't get ignored.

It seems like the chan really went downhill after the workshop board was introduced. Before that, everyone got the same amount of hilarious, brutal criticism for their art because it was all in the same place and there was no metaphorical short bus. People who had terrible art were ripped to shreds and given a decent amount of criticism, while the 'good' artists were also given criticism when needed. That was what I used to like about this place. There was no hugbox, and the boards were way more active. Less whining was had and everyone had more stupid fun. It wouldn't be so terrible if people weren't forcibly thrown in there.

Will the mods ever consider getting rid of the awful hugbox that is /workshop/? What are your opinions on this?

Also, I read some of the things the quoted artist has said in context, and I think you guys misrepresented her. That artist is not against critique - she(?) is against FANDOM BASHING (ie where people get upset that Medic is as flaming gay as he is in their headcanon), which is very unfortunate and inexcusable, but KIND OF HAPPENS EVERYWHERE. IN EVERY FANDOM.

Tf2Chan I think is very accepting about different headcanons because we realize Valve let a lot of things open on purpose. It's the reason why CatBounty (one of the most popular and talented fanfic writers we have to offer) can write RED Spy as being in a loving, romantic relationship with BLU Scootma, and I can write him as using her only for sex and information on her son, and we BOTH ARE ACCEPTED.

I mean, we're not a fan of dumb heavy because it's kind of CANON that he's not an idiot, but that's really about as far as it goes. And even then, everything is fair game for lulz.

I just. Your argument makes no sense. We're all for GOOD WRITING whether it adheres to popular fanons or not how could you compare our valuing honest, constructive feedback (as a general rule) as being childish fandom-bashing I can't.
>> No. 1242
Bring back /workshop/, but bring it back as a board where you can get critique on any artwork you do, not just TF2. The only reason I've stopped posting my artwork is because I took a sabbatical from TF2 artwork.

I love getting crit, even if it makes me feel like I'm never going to improve sometimes.

The Mancraft server is now available! To learn more about its features and to see an overview of the map, please visit http://mancraft.tf2chan.net

Mancraft is a whitelist server, so if you wish to connect and play, please leave a post in this thread or ask a mod in IRC or Steam Chat to be added.

If you have played in the previous Mancraft server, then you don't need to ask to be added again. The previous whitelist has been carried over to the new server.

Happy building, guys!

Figured we should have a new thread for the TF2chan Mantrain once more, considering the Man-Caboose had to be laid to rest. The Man-Caboose fun/event server had to be put down due to lack of player participation and lack of player interest.

On top of that, I would like to remind everyone that we do have a voice server for you guys to hang out in and chat. Information about it can be found on the Servers tab on the front page of the site. The voice server is currently set to host Ventrilo. However, if popular opinion prefers it, I can set it to host Mumble instead. So let me know what you guys want!

Back to the TF2chan Mantrain, the server now supports the maps that the Man-Caboose held. However, they are not a part of the normal mapcycle and as such, require a Mantrain moderator to change it to a map that the Man-Caboose used to have.

The following 'fun' maps are listed as follows and requires a Mantrain moderator to change the map over to them:
achievement_all_v4
balls_soccerv2
cp_bedrooms3
cp_volleyball_pool
cyberpunk
dm_mariokart2_b3
harbl_hotel
koth_always_b2

I'm not sure if there is some kind of bug or if I'm just supremely unlucky, but lately it seems that when I try to play on the Mantrain, whenever my team would win everyone would lose connection. Not trying to sound like I'm whining or anything, it's just even after the group announcement that it was fixed, it just happened. Just thought I should let you know it's still crashing.

Just wanted to stop in and say I had a lot of fun with the reunion party event tonight. It was enjoyable, and I hope to see and attend more in the future.

The Mantrain has been moved to Chicago, a neutral server that'll provide fairer ping to our friends on the West coast, compared to the New York server that it was hosted on. Pings will be fair all-round for both West and East coast players, and for Canadian players (averaging 50).

New server address: 68.232.181.77:27015

The server has also been updated with more fun maps to play on. Just simply RTV to play them!

As always, I am always open to suggestions. Just send me a message on Steam or reply to this thread.

As I'm sure some of us will agree, /gmod/ has been especially full of shit lately, if not all the time. This thread will begin in mods-only-land, then be moved to a more general location if necessary.

What I propose is that we make some guidelines for /gmod/, to prevent people from posting what is essentially absolute garbage with no redeeming qualities, while still allowing for those who put in minimal effort and get something acceptable. The image I show you here is related, in that I myself made it several years ago within the span of maybe 20-30 minutes, yet it is still a decent scene. As such, I propose we enact some regulation/restriction/what have you to /gmod/, and actually set some sort of guidelines on the question of "How low quality an image will we accept?"

It's REALLY not that hard to make a simple scene like this, especially considering all the new tools that are around since back in the day when GMod was free, but I'm seeing people posting things that are worse than MY old crap, and it annoys me.

Hum... So let's see what we have.
A tutorial thread (posing/editing), a source thread, a texture and modeling tutorial too I guess...
We could have some kind of project too, as a rp done with gmod? That would be interesting, I've done it before on tumblr and it was fun because it was interactive and challenging~
Also, a critique thread, maybe?
There's not much else to say I think... hum.

Sounds good then. If you're all waiting for a verdict here, I would suggest getting the threads you want started properly, and if any issues arise then I'll try to get it taken care of. All that I'm actually waiting for in terms of official stuff from Kumori is whether or not I can delete the shittiest quality stuff off /gmod/.
